What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It can help correct sagging eyelids that may obstruct vision or remove puffiness and bags that make you look fatigued or older. Whether you’re looking to reduce the signs of aging or improve the function of your eyelids, blepharoplasty offers a lasting solution.

Types of Blepharoplasty Surgeries:

  • Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty: Addresses excess skin and fat on the upper eyelids, which can make the eyes look hooded or even obstruct vision.

  • Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty: Removes puffiness under the eyes, a common area for fat deposits or bags, and can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines around the lower eyelids.

  • Combined Eyelid Surgery: For individuals who have concerns with both the upper and lower eyelids, a combination approach may be recommended.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

When you choose blepharoplasty at Givens MD | Faces Medspa, you can expect a comprehensive and caring experience from start to finish. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure:

CONSULTATION

Your journey begins with a thorough consultation, where Dr. Givens will assess your eyelid concerns and determine the best course of action. He will discuss your medical history, expectations, and the options available to achieve your desired results.

THE PROCEDURE

The blepharoplasty procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area, or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. The surgeon makes small incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Fat, skin, and muscle are carefully adjusted to create a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

RECOVERY

While recovery time varies from person to person, most patients can expect some swelling and bruising around the eyes. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. We provide post-surgical care instructions to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible. Most patients return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks.

Blepharoplasty Before and Afters

  • What do neuromodulators do?
Neuromodulators (including Botox and Dysport) relax the muscles and reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the face and neck. These treatments combat forehead lines, glabella lines ("11's" between the brows), crows feet (around the eyes), smile lines, neck lines, and other wrinkles associated with aging. They can also be used to help sculpt and lift facial features including for a nonsurgical brow lift and a nonsurgical neck lift.
  • What is the difference between BOTOX and Dysport?
While BOTOX and Dysport both use the same substance (botulinum toxin A) and are based on the same mechanism of action, the size of the molecules in the injections are significantly different. Dysport contains smaller molecules of botulinum toxin type A than BOTOX. - Dysport can spread through your cells more easily - Dysport may begin working slightly faster than BOTOX - Results from Dysport and Botox last for a similar amount of time
  • How many units of Botox will I need? How many units of Dysport will I need?
The amount of units needed can differ from person to person depending upon your desired outcome, the area of concern to be treated, the strength of the muscles in the area, and whether the treatment is for prevention or to treat existing fine lines and wrinkles and their severity.
  • When will I see results from Botox and Dysport?
Most patients can expect to notice early results of Dysport between two to five days following treatment, while results from Botox may take seven to fourteen days. The degree of muscle relation can continue to evolve for about two weeks and the results last for three to four months. The longer the BOTOX treatments have been routinely performed, the more relaxed the facial wrinkles will appear over time. Results of Dysport are similar, but often with a slightly quicker onset of action.
  • How long does Botox last? How long does Dysport last?
Results may vary based upon the dose given, as well as on muscle strength of the area and metabolism, as our bodies metabolize (or break down) the Neuromodulators over time. Treatment to maintain your results are recommend every three to four months. Using medical grade skin care products at home as part of a daily skin care regime can help to maintain your results and improve the appearance and quality of your skin.
  • Does Botox and Dysport hurt?
Many of us are not big fans of shots, especially needles in general. However, Neuromodulators are generally quickly injected with a minimal amount of discomfort, using the smallest needle available. Many of our patients barely notice the injections.
  • Who are good candidates for BOTOX and Dysport?
BOTOX and Dysport have been proven safe and effective for treatment of a wide variety of patient and wrinkle types, however, the earlier the treatment is started, the more favorable the results can be. Some patients are not candidates for this type of treatment and include those diagnosed with neurological conditions or disorders affecting muscle movement, history of allergy to the botulinum toxin product, or those with unrealistic expectations from the treatment. Patients who are pregnant or nursing are discouraged from undergoing treatment.

EYELID SURGERY SYNOPSIS

Since there are many different reasons for patients to undergo eyelid surgery, the specific method used can vary.  Dr. Givens is the regional expert in the latest surgical concepts, such as volume preservation and augmentation blepharoplasty, transconjunctival fat transposition lower blepharoplasty, and periocular laser resurfacing.  Lower eyelids may require surgery if excess skin, fine wrinkles, or puffy bags appear underneath the eyes. In certain cases, blepharoplasty is used on people who want a more defined upper eyelid crease. Surgery can also repair puffiness on and around the upper eyelids.

Eyelid surgeries are usually performed under local anesthesia, so Dr. Givens can assess the symmetry of your eyes during surgery. Individually, the procedures take about 30 to 45 minutes to perform. Upper and lower eyelid surgery with laser skin resurfacing takes about 90 minutes in total. Stitches will be placed for upper blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery. These are usually outpatient procedures, meaning you will go home the same day.

Your eyes will be swollen after surgery, but most swelling is gone after one month. Stitches will dissolve on their own. If non-dissolvable stitches are placed, they will be removed after one week. Dr. Givens will see you for one or more follow-up visits to ensure you are healing in a timely fashion.

DERMAL FILLER

With the use of dermal fillers, we can immediately smooth out unwanted lines; add definition to lips, cheeks, or jaw lines; and even fill in certain acne scars with little-to-no down time.
