What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle from the upper or lower eyelids. It can help correct sagging eyelids that may obstruct vision or remove puffiness and bags that make you look fatigued or older. Whether you’re looking to reduce the signs of aging or improve the function of your eyelids, blepharoplasty offers a lasting solution.

Types of Blepharoplasty Surgeries:

  • Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty: Addresses excess skin and fat on the upper eyelids, which can make the eyes look hooded or even obstruct vision.

  • Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty: Removes puffiness under the eyes, a common area for fat deposits or bags, and can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines around the lower eyelids.

  • Combined Eyelid Surgery: For individuals who have concerns with both the upper and lower eyelids, a combination approach may be recommended.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure: What to Expect

When you choose blepharoplasty at Givens MD | Faces Medspa, you can expect a comprehensive and caring experience from start to finish. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure:

CONSULTATION

Your journey begins with a thorough consultation, where Dr. Givens will assess your eyelid concerns and determine the best course of action. He will discuss your medical history, expectations, and the options available to achieve your desired results.

THE PROCEDURE

The blepharoplasty procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the area, or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery. The surgeon makes small incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids to minimize visible scarring. Fat, skin, and muscle are carefully adjusted to create a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

RECOVERY

While recovery time varies from person to person, most patients can expect some swelling and bruising around the eyes. This is normal and usually subsides within a few days. We provide post-surgical care instructions to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible. Most patients return to normal activities within 1-2 weeks.

EYELID SURGERY SYNOPSIS

Since there are many different reasons for patients to undergo eyelid surgery, the specific method used can vary.  Dr. Givens is the regional expert in the latest surgical concepts, such as volume preservation and augmentation blepharoplasty, transconjunctival fat transposition lower blepharoplasty, and periocular laser resurfacing.  Lower eyelids may require surgery if excess skin, fine wrinkles, or puffy bags appear underneath the eyes. In certain cases, blepharoplasty is used on people who want a more defined upper eyelid crease. Surgery can also repair puffiness on and around the upper eyelids.

Eyelid surgeries are usually performed under local anesthesia, so Dr. Givens can assess the symmetry of your eyes during surgery. Individually, the procedures take about 30 to 45 minutes to perform. Upper and lower eyelid surgery with laser skin resurfacing takes about 90 minutes in total. Stitches will be placed for upper blepharoplasty and ptosis surgery. These are usually outpatient procedures, meaning you will go home the same day.

Your eyes will be swollen after surgery, but most swelling is gone after one month. Stitches will dissolve on their own. If non-dissolvable stitches are placed, they will be removed after one week. Dr. Givens will see you for one or more follow-up visits to ensure you are healing in a timely fashion.

DERMAL FILLER

With the use of dermal fillers, we can immediately smooth out unwanted lines; add definition to lips, cheeks, or jaw lines; and even fill in certain acne scars with little-to-no down time.
